Many books such as Harry Potter, The chronicles of Narnia or A series of unfortunate events are liked by people of all ages even though their specific demographic is children. However, there are plenty other books like these which not everyone knows about. Here I made a list of not as mainstream books that would appeal to adults too. From witches, faeries, trolls and vampires to beautiful friendships and adventures, this list contains a few genres for all book lovers out there.

A book series you can read in a blink of an eye! It is an on-going series published between 2004 and 2014, and it follows the adventures of a fourteen year old boy who becomes the apprentice of a spook. From trapping witches with silver chains to fighting demons in dungeons, get ready for a delectable piece of literature.

The Magisterium series by Cassandra Clare and Holly Black
This one is a good recommendation to all Harry Potter fans. The author of the popular series Mortal Instruments joined Holly Black in writing another book series about another school for magic. This series currently has 3 books published and the fans are waiting for the fourth one to come out this year. The main character is a sarcastic, lovable version of Voldemort and unlike Harry, he is doing his best not to become a student at this school.

Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins
The debut series of Hunger Games author, Suzanne Collins follows an eleven year old boy named Gregor that falls into a subterranean world where giant insects talk funny and people travel on giant bats. A series that would make any Game of Thrones fan proud over how many corpses it has. It’s really surprising that this is a book for kids.

Darkside by Tom Becker
A roughly written book with a captivating story about a boy that gets lost in a secret world from inside London that’s run by Jack the Ripper. It was published in 2007 and is followed by four more books in the series. The story is full of supernatural creatures such as werewolves and vampires, the main characters’ friend and help on the other side being a wolf man. A nice book for vampire lovers.

Shadow forest by Matt Haig
For all of the supernatural creature fans out there, this is a book about emaciated, side-eyed trolls and pixies. As the two main characters move to live with their aunt in Norway, they are told about the Shadow forest where their uncle has disappeared years ago and never returned. The plot revolves around Samuel, the main character, as he is forced to go into the forest to find his sister which got lost.
The book was published in 2007 and it also has a sequel.

Vampirates by Justin Somper
Like a breath of fresh air, this series is quick to read and take a liking to. In a world where most of the land got swallowed by waters, pirates roam freely through the waves. Twins Grace and Conner lose their only parent and run away with their father’s yacht from the rich family that tries to adopt them. As the yacht is destroyed in a storm the twins become stranded on the ocean. The boy is picked up by regular pirates while the girl finds herself on a ship of pirate vampires.

Coraline by Neil Gaiman
Author of popular series American Gods worked side by side with the director of the Laika Studio animated film with the same name. The idea of the movie was originally Neil Gaiman’s so the main idea is pretty much the same, however getting to the final is different in the book. Also the film came first in this case. As both of the stories involve some horror elements, this is definitely not a good night story for children.

Fablehaven by Brandon Mull
A book that slightly reminded me of Gravity Falls since it features two siblings that go live with their older relative in a strange house full of secrets.
This is another book full of magical creatures since they’re grandparents’ house is a sanctuary for the supernatural.
